A common end to cable chaos

David Martin MEP today welcomed the prospect of an end to the cable chaos of multiple charging devices when Labour MEPs backed proposals to for a Europe-wide common mobile phone charger.

In a vote to simplify national rules on radio equipment that is sold across the EU, the European Parliament has backed proposals for a single standard for mobile phone chargers.

Commenting on the vote Mr Martin said:

“Following today’s vote we are a step closer to making life easier for phone users and cutting down on electrical waste.

“Some households accumulate as many chargers as they have had mobile devices, the rest throw them away to join the six thousand tonnes of mobile phone chargers discarded every year in the European Union.

“A common European charger makes perfect sense – both for consumers and for the benefit of the environment.”

Common chargers will be introduced over the next few years and by 2017 all manufacturers will have to follow the same standard, slashing waste and saving consumers money.”
