French Presidency priorities lack social dimension When Nicolas Sarkozy laid out the French Presidency priorities for the next six months before the European Parliament he missed a golden opportunity to re-launch the European social agenda and re-engage European citizens in the need for action at the European level. After dealing with the implications of the Irish ‘No’ vote in the referendum on the Lisbon Treaty the French President laid out his four priorities which are: energy and climate change, migration, security and defence, and agricultural policy. Although he believes that the common denominator to these priorities is the...

The European Commission have agreed to initiate comprehensive European legislation outlawing discrimination on the grounds of gender, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age and sexual orientation. There was a danger that as a result of Conservative governments and MEPs putting pressure on the European Commission, they would limit the new draft...

Labour MEPs have been campaigning on the issue of tracking missing children within the EU for a number of years. The purpose of the action plan is to make Europe “the first economy of the low-carbon age”. The aim is a 20% cut in greenhouse gas emissions, a 20% increase in energy efficiency, and to have 20% of energy from renewable sources, such as wind or wave power – all by 2020. The plan will completely overhaul the way we tackle climate change...

With the Kyoto limits on greenhouse gases due to expire in 2012, the debate on what should replace them has moved centre stage in the European Parliament’s Temporary Committee on Climate Change. A United Nations (UN) panel of experts told MEPs that to avert catastrophic climate change, temperatures must rise by no more than 2 degrees celsius. The report drafted in response to a European Commission consultation paper says that 650,000 people a year die from smoking, including 80,000 from passive smoking, with children being particularly vulnerable.
