Sir,-
So the Janus-faced Vince Cable does not want his remarks at the Liberal Conference to be interpreted as ‘an outburst of Marxism’: would that they were. Marx was well aware that in a ‘crisis of capitalism’ working people would always be made to pay for the excesses of bankers - and that is wrong.
Well, as a former academic economist Vince will have read his Marx as well as his Adam Smith and know that it was the opinion of the author of The Wealth of Nations, that as soon as you had a meeting of more than a couple of capitalists in any room they would soon be conspiring to form cartels to milk the public and increase their profits. Well nothing changes.
However ,Vince Cable is serving in - is an agent of - a Government that is about to put in place policies that will punish the general public for the excesses of capitalists and he still makes rhetorical attacks on the ‘unpleasant and unacceptable face of capitalism’ as Ted Heath put it.
He has got to make up his mind. Vince Cable cannot have it both ways. But then again maybe he can, maybe he is still a Liberal Democrat - if so what is he doing in a Tory Government?
Yours sincerely
