MORE HONEST FOOD LABELLING David supported the ‘traffic light’ system of food labelling that was unfortunately defeated in the June Plenary, however big gains were made when the Parliament backed rules for country of origin and more honesty in food labelling.

CHRISTIAN AID ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION David joined a group of Accountants, Academics and Christian Aid Activists in a Christian Aid-sponsored round table discussion addressing the issue of large-scale tax dodging by multi-national corporations.

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT David gave his support to Fairtrade’s ‘Big Swap’ campaign that ran for two weeks until 7 March. As well as urging shoppers to buy Fairtrade products, MEPs put pressure on the European Institutions to show their support.

TACKLING POVERTY CONFERENCE In March 2010 David met with delegates of a major European Conference held in Glasgow to discuss ways of tackling poverty and social exclusion through education for democratic citizenship and human rights.

ROBIN HOOD TAX At the February 2010 Plenary David asks that the Commissioner for Trade look seriously at the Robin Hood Tax - a .05% tax on bank transactions to raise billions for development in the Third World.

NEW WORKING GROUP LAUNCH A new Working Group on Innovation, Access to Medicines and Poverty-Related Diseases, Chaired by David Martin is launched at the European Parliament in February.
